Roblox Islands (formerly Skyblock) is a survival crafting game where you start on a floating island and build your way up from nothing. Chop trees, mine rocks, farm crops, build machines, and trade with other players. The game has a deep crafting and automation system that can feel overwhelming for new players. This guide tells you exactly what to build first and how to set up an efficient island.

🏝️ First Steps - What to Do Immediately
- Chop trees and clear rocks. Start gathering wood and stone. These are your basic building materials for everything.
- Do NOT cut your starter fruit tree. This tree is hard to replace and gives you valuable recurring resources. Leave it alone.
- Build a Workbench. Your first crafting station. Unlock it as soon as you have enough wood.
- Upgrade to Tier 1 Workbench. This unlocks more advanced recipes including smelters and farming tools.
- Build a Campfire. Use it to smelt your first iron bars from iron ore and coal.
- Craft 3 Small Smelters. Once you have enough iron bars, replace your campfire with 3 smelters. Way more efficient.
Your first 30 minutes should be: chop trees, build workbench, upgrade workbench, build campfire, smelt iron, craft smelters. In that order.
🔧 Best Starter Setup
After your first smelters are running, here is how to organize your island:
- Farming area: Clear a flat section for crop rows. Till the soil, plant seeds, water them.
- Smelting station: Keep your 3 smelters near your ore deposits for easy access.
- Storage area: Build chests to organize your materials. One for wood, one for stone, one for metals, one for crops.
- Crafting station: Keep your workbench central so you can access everything quickly.
- Use the Layout feature in the build menu to save your farm designs. Lets you experiment without rebuilding from scratch.
🌾 Best Crops to Grow
Early Game
- Wheat - Fast growth, easy to sell. Your bread and butter (literally) for early income.
- Carrots - Slightly more valuable than wheat. Good for automated farms later.
- Onions - Another reliable early crop with fast growth cycles.
Mid Game
- Starfruit - Best mid-game crop. Reliable selling price and good growth time.
- Plums - Excellent for year-round income since they do not depend on seasons.
Late Game
- Pineapples - Highest per-unit value. Spring seasonal crop, so plan around the season.
- Processed goods - Turn raw crops into bread, pies, and other items for much higher sell prices.
Always replant immediately after harvesting. Every minute your soil sits empty is money lost.
⛏️ Resource Gathering Guide
- Wood: Chop every tree. Replant saplings for a sustainable wood supply.
- Stone: Mine rocks. Stone is needed for building and crafting tools.
- Iron: Mine iron ore deposits. Smelt with coal to get iron bars. Used for most mid-game crafting.
- Gold: Gold deposits appear on your island. Set up drills on them for passive gold farming. Gold sells for great prices.
- Coal: Essential fuel for smelting. Mine coal deposits and stockpile it.
⚙️ Automation & Machines
Automation is what separates beginners from advanced players. Here is how to set it up:
Core Components
- Totems - Automatically harvest crops in a 3x3 grid. The foundation of any automated farm.
- Conveyors - Transport harvested items from totem areas to storage. Build conveyor belts connecting your farms to chests.
- Industrial Chests - Place at the end of conveyor lines to collect everything automatically.
- Industrial Smelters - Process ore without your input. Way faster than manual smelting.
- Industrial Washers - Clean oily crops for processing into higher-value goods.
- Mills - Turn raw materials into refined products for more profit.
Build Strategy
- Stack farms vertically. Build farm layers on top of each other to maximize island space.
- Use guardrails on conveyors. Glass blocks or rails prevent items from falling off belts.
- Stagger totem timers. Use totem disablers to prevent all totems from harvesting at once. This avoids hitting the despawn limit (items disappear if 80+ drop at once).
💰 How to Make Money Fast
- Sell crops at the Hub. Visit Tom at the Hub portal to sell your harvest. Replant immediately after every sale.
- Gold farming. Set up drills on gold deposits and sell refined gold. Consistent, reliable income.
- Craft and sell factory parts. Steel mills, drills, and industrial components are in high demand from other players. Crafting and selling these is often more profitable than crop farming.
- Fishing. Low-effort way to earn coins. You can also find treasure chests with rare items while fishing.
- Process raw materials. Turning wheat into bread, or raw ore into refined bars, dramatically increases sell value.
- Market flipping. Check player shops, buy underpriced items, resell at your own vending machines for profit.
📊 Skill Progression Tips
- Check your Skills menu (scroll icon) regularly. Leveling up skills unlocks better seeds, higher yields, and new features.
- Manual farming gives the most XP. In early game, harvest crops by hand with a sickle for fastest Farming skill progression.
- Level up Economy skill by selling items to NPCs and players. Higher Economy unlocks advanced trading features.
- Farming skill unlocks crop totems at higher levels. This is your gateway to full automation.
- Buy new seeds from Cletus at the Hub as your Farming level increases. Better seeds = more profitable crops.
❌ Mistakes Every Beginner Makes
- Cutting the starter fruit tree. It is hard to get back. Leave it and use it for recurring resources.
- Not organizing storage. Without separate chests for different materials, you waste time searching for items constantly.
- Ignoring automation. Manual farming is fine early on but becomes unbearable at scale. Start building totems and conveyors as soon as possible.
- Leaving soil empty. After harvesting, replant immediately. Empty soil earns nothing.
- Overproducing items past the despawn limit. If more than ~80 items drop on your island at once, they vanish. Stagger your totem timers.
- Not visiting the Hub regularly. Sell your goods, buy new seeds, check player shops for deals. The Hub is essential.
- Trading rare items without knowing values. Check current market prices before accepting any trade. New players get ripped off constantly.
